Elizabethan Stitches- an investigation into 16th & 17th century needlework

Research from books and text-based archives tells a story about the past, but the detailed examination of surviving artefacts in museum collections has provided a new ‘story’ – challenging our ideas about how needlework was produced during this era. This talk looks at the detective work, and the secrets that these beautiful objects have to reveal.

Elizabethan Flowers 

The stars and lights of heaven’ – Zeus instructed his daughter Flora to descend from the heavens  to bring the stars and lights to earth, these are our beautiful wild flowers. In this talk Anthea Guthrie, who specialises in gold medal winning historical show gardens, will explain the meaning of ancient flowery folk lore and relate it to the floral motifs featured in a few examples of 16th Century Coifs.
