St Andrews
Famous for hosting our future King and Queen during their university years and its breathtaking golf courses, St Andrews is also a beautiful historic coastal town. Enjoy the many local historic sites such at St Andrews Cathedral, stroll along the beach just in front of our hotel, or absorb the local culture in the many charming cafes and independent shops.
A warm welcome awaits you at Hotel du Vin. This 36 room hotel will be our home-from-home as we enjoy exclusive use for the retreat. With wide views over the sea and charming walks straight out of the front door, this hotel is the perfect place to host our retreat. Breakfast, coffee break, lunch, afternoon tea, and dinner will be served at the hotel each day (included).
Your Choice of Tutors
Students will be asked to choose 2 tutors, spending 3 days with each tutor.
Phillipa Turnbull - Scottish designs (Crewel Work)
Your host Phillipa Turnbull is an experienced embroidery designer, tutor and lecturer. She has been producing beautiful Crewel Work kits and running historic needlework tours and retreats for over 20 years.
Phillipa will offer a selection of Scottish Crewel Work designs for students to choose between.
Zina Kazban is a graduate of the Future Tutors Programme at the Royal School of Needlework and returns to teach for Lady Anne’s Needlework for the 4th time!
Zina’s design for this retreat is a replica of a late-17th century floral panel. The embroidery is worked with silks, metal cords and purls in a distinctive historic way. Students will learn how to shade with silks, apply cords with invisible stitches, couching wrapped silk, and creating raised elements.
Natalie Dupuis - Two Birds (or nué)
Natalie was first introduced to needlework through a sewing class she took as a young teenager. As a trained teacher, Natalie enjoys sharing her skill and experience with others with a particular focus on the traditional art of Or Nué.
Natalie’s design, which features two birds, is based on an intricate Pietra Dura table top from Burghley House. The design will be worked in Or Nué.
“A big thank is due to you for one of the most stimulating and interesting week that I have had for some time”
Jean 2018 & 2019 Retreat participant
Programme
Classes are divided into two sessions of three days each. Since we will have exclusive use of the hotel, those who wish to continue stitching during the rest periods will be able to return to the workroom at any time.

Other Programmed Activities
We always make sure we’re not far away from beautiful and fascinating places to visit during our residential retreats. During this retreat we will visit two of Scotland’s finest museums, two famous castles, and enjoy evening lectures plus a fun quiz night to round off the week. Read more about the programmed activities here.
Lectures with our tutors and guest speakers
We will enjoy special evening events and lectures during the retreat, including an evening with our Master Weaver Ian Dale. Ian is a supplier of the finest woven linens and silks to museums and historic houses world-wideand an ever-popular speaker during our retreats.
We will also hear from from Historic Houses expert Catherine Gillies as well as our tutors Phillipa and Natalie.
Visit to Glamis Castle
We will begin our retreat with a special visit to the glorious and spectacular Glamis Castle. Just 40 minutes north of Edinburgh, this iconic castle was the childhood home to HRH The Queen Mother.
Whilst there, we will explore the house and view some of the family’s most treasured textile possessions.
Visit to The Burrell Museum
On our return to Edinburgh we will visit the recently re-opened Burrell Museum where we will see some of the exquisite and rare historic embroideries in the Museum’s collection.

What are the key dates and times?
This retreat begins on 29th October 2022 (read on for arrival instructions). Classes will begin at 9am on 30th October. The retreat will officially end after our visit to the Burrell Museum on 6th November 2022.
How can I get to St Andrews?
St Andrews is in a remote part of Scotland so to make your travel to and from there as easy as possible, we will begin and end our retreat in Edinburgh. From there, we will travel together by coach to St Andrews and return again in the same way. Domestic and international travel can be booked easily to and from Edinburgh International Airport and Waverley Station.
The Macdonald Holyrood Hotel will be our Edinburgh meeting point. We ask that you be there no later than 9am on 29th October 2022 to depart at 9.30am for the journey to the National Museums Scotland and afterwards to St Andrews.
At the end of the retreat on 6th November, we will depart St Andrews at 10.30am and arrive at Edinburgh at approximately 5pm (after being at the Burrell Museum during the day).
If you are planning to travel directly to St Andrews by car or by train, please aim to be at Hotel du Vin in St Andrews no later than 8pm on the 29th October in order to check in to your room. Leuchars Station is the nearest train station to our hotel (10 mins by taxi).
How many tutors can I choose?
Whilst all tutors are present throughout the retreat, students will choose 2 classes on which to spend their 6 days of tuitions, 3 days with each tutor.
Is this retreat suitable for all levels of stitching experience?
Yes. The designs featured in our retreats are meant to be challenging, however all are developed with both beginner and advanced embroiderers in mind. Our small class sizes mean that each student will receive ample one-on-one time with the tutor and will have the time and space to go at their own pace, whether you are a beginner or a very advanced embroiderer.
The retreats are a great place to develop a community of like-minded embroiderers and are a chance for everyone to learn from questions asked by novice through to the more experienced embroiderers in the group.
Can you tell me more about the needlework projects we will be working on?
The designs for this retreat are currently in development. We will send updates as soon as we have more information.
What are the payment requirements?
The price of this retreat starts from £6,150 for a classic room to £7,350 for a suite. You may reserve your place now by paying a £500 deposit. Full payment is due by 30th June 2022, or upon booking if booked after this date.
Do you offer any alternative payment plans?
We usually offer alternative payment plans, but due to the short lead time this will not be possible for this retreat.
What is your cancellation policy (outside of Covid-19)?
You may cancel your place at any time. Written notification from the person who made the booking or your travel agent must be received at our offices by email. Since we incur costs in cancelling your place, refunds are applied as follows:
- Less than six months before event date – no refund
- Six months to 1 year prior to event date – 50% of the price of your booking
- More than one year prior to retreat – 100% refund (minus deposit)
Note: If the reason for your cancellation is covered under the terms of your insurance policy, you may be able to reclaim these charges.
What if your cancellation policy (related to Covid-19)?
We are monitoring the status of the COVID-19 pandemic and the potential affect on this event. If it becomes obvious that the event should not go ahead, we will reschedule and transfer your booking in its entirety. If this is not a suitable option, a full refund will be offered.
In the meantime, we will continue to follow the advice of our travel body, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) and the guidance UK Government and further guidelines on this matter will be updated as soon as we have further information.
Where will we be staying?
A warm welcome awaits you at Hotel du Vin, a beautiful 4-star hotel overlooking the sea. This 36 room hotel will be our home-from-home as we enjoy exclusive use for the whole retreat.
Can I upgrade my room?
Yes. All room rates are published in ‘Prices’ above.
I have a health or dietary restriction, will you be able to accommodate me?
Yes. We have dealt with a wide range of health and dietary concerns over the years and have no issue with handling this for you. When filling in your registration form, you will be able to provide details of what we need to be aware of. However not all of our retreats are suitable for some disabilities and we must note that there is no lift at this hotel. If you have concerns in this regard and wish to speak with us, please get in touch here.
Can my partner join me on the retreat?
Unfortunately this retreat is strictly for participants only.
We don’t allow any non-stitching partners to attend simply because it disrupts the ambience within the group that develops over the trip. We would be absolutely thrilled however if your partner is a stitcher and wishes to attend classes.
Can I extend my stay?
Arriving early, or staying on after a retreat, can be a great way to extend your holiday and many people choose to do this, especially at the beginning of the retreat as it means you can start your classes well rested and in the right frame of mind. Edinburgh is a particularly pleasant place to spend a few extra days so we would highly recommend it.
If you intend to arrive early to St Andrews and would like additional nights at Hotel Du Vin, this will need to be booked directly via the hotel. Please contact us below for any advice about travel or to book extra nights in Edinburgh or St Andrews.
Will there be any free time to shop, rest or explore?
This retreat is comfortably paced to allow you to rest and enjoy St Andrews. However, many stitchers arrive early to really enjoy and immerse themselves in the local area.
