Mandy completed her Royal School of Needlework Apprenticeship in 1995 then continued, firstly as a tutor and then as Studio manager, overseeing a wide variety of royal and other commissions, including the needlework on the then Kate Middleton’s wedding dress, two joint projects with Phillipa: creating a lectern fall for the 350 year anniversary of The Broderer’s Guild and an embroidered woolsack for the Golden Jubilee of HRH Queen Elizabeth II.

Mandy's depth of knowledge and ability to teach technique to all levels of embroiderer is remarkable.

Shakespeare's Sweet bag

This exquisite red sweet bag is worked in beautiful silk threads in yellow, greens and pinks with gold twist and gold spangles through out on a rich deep pink silk fabric. The flowers and rosehips are embroidered in Long & Short Shading, Satin Stitch and Split Stitch. The gold twist is then couched, forming the stems and outlining the flowers and rosehips. Gold spangles are scattered though out the design and couched in place.

The inspiration for the design is from a 1560-1600 sweet bag in the Shakespeare’s Birthplace TrustThe SBT is the independent charity that cares for the world’s greatest Shakespeare heritage sites in Stratford-upon-Avon, and promotes the enjoyment and understanding of Shakespeare’s works, life and times all over the world. A percentage of each sale supports the vital care and conservation of The Shakespeare Houses and the treasures in the Trust’s Collection, including the inspiration for this design.

Slate frame 24 inch (61 cm) with 31 inch arms (81.5cm), thimble (if you like to use one), embroidery scissors

These 2 energetic and enthusiastic dogs are embroidered with beautiful DeVere silks on a “biscuity” coloured silk fabric. The dogs are worked in french knots and stumpwork needlelace techniques

Course outline:
Day 1, session 1: Introduction, needlelace for the dog.
Day 1, session 2: French knots for back dog.
Day 2, session 1: Needlelace collar and ear
Day 2, session 2: Needlelace dog and collar. Apply beads for eyes, couch down gimp. Recap of what we have done.

Shakespeare's Little Frog

This beautiful little frog is based on a motif found on an unfinished Elizabethan Coif in the Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust Collection. Mandy will teach you the historic stitches required to create your frog which, once finished, could be made up into a brooch or other adornment of your choosing.

The course was previously taught as an online pre-recorded class.
