Trish Burr is a Cape Town-based designer, author and teacher of hand embroidery. Specialising in Needlepainting and Whitework patterns, her artistic designs have inspired many to take up the craft. She has published 8 books, the latest of which has been published in collaboration with The Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew. Her online shop offers Needlepainting and Whitework patterns, embroidery materials and tutorials for all levels from beginner to advanced.

This Nasturtium flower in vibrant shades of red/terracotta is reproduced from a botanical painting by artist Pierre Joseph Redoute 1759-1840. It is the ideal project to study the art of Needlepainting in more depth. Students will learn how to direct long and short stitch to fit a shape, how to use contrasting colours to achieve beautiful shading, and how to create outlines with some padding to make your embroidery pop! Some previous experience of Surface Embroidery is recommended.

Learn the art of Whitework with colour embroidery with this Elizabethan-inspired design. The student will learn Trish’s simple method of achieving beautiful Raised and Padded Satin Stitch, Long & Short Stitch, and the use of Outline Stitch to define areas in your embroidery. This is an interesting project with vibrant colour combinations that is guaranteed to provide a delightful learning experience.

This antique Tulip flower with moth, is reproduced from a botanical painting by artist Georg Dionysius Ehret (1708-1770). Studying the art of Needlepainting in depth, students will learn how to direct Long & Short Stitch, use Padding and make their embroidery pop! Some previous experience of Needlepainting is necessary for this class.
